Download the Right Apps Before You Go
China has its own digital ecosystem. Many Western apps (like Google Maps or WhatsApp) don’t work unless you use a VPN. Instead, download:
WeChat (for messaging and payments)
Alipay (for mobile payments)
Baidu Maps or Apple Maps (for navigation)
Pleco (offline Chinese-English dictionary)
Don’t worry — on our tours, we guide you through using these tools step by step.
Bring a VPN (Just in Case)
If you want access to Instagram, Gmail, or Google, install a trusted VPN before you leave. Some apps won’t download once you’re in China, so set everything up in advance.
Toilet Paper Isn’t Always Available
Public toilets are usually clean — but often don’t supply toilet paper. Pack a small pack of tissues and hand sanitizer, and keep them with you at all times. Trust us, this tip goes a long way!
Cash Is Out, Mobile Pay Is In
Most locals use WeChat Pay or Alipay — even in small noodle shops or taxis. Foreigners can now link their credit cards to these apps, but it’s best to sort this before your trip. We’ll help you set it up on Day 1 of your journey.
Get a Local SIM or eSIM
Staying connected makes your trip way smoother. We recommend getting a Chinese SIM card or eSIM so you can use maps, translate signs, and stay in touch with your group.
Practice a Few Key Mandarin Phrases
You don’t need to speak fluent Mandarin, but learning simple phrases like:
Nǐ hǎo (Hello)
Xièxiè (Thank you)
Bù yào (No, thank you)
Duōshǎo qián? (How much?)
…goes a long way in building connection and confidence.
Respect Local Customs
China has different social norms — for example:
Don’t stick chopsticks upright in rice (it’s bad luck).
Tipping is not expected in most places.
Be mindful of noise in public areas (especially on trains).
Our guides will give you cultural tips along the way so you feel confident and respectful.
China Is Safe — But Be Street Smart
China is one of the safest countries to travel in, especially for tourists. Petty theft is rare, but still be cautious in crowded places and keep valuables secure.
Pack Smart — Don’t Overdo It
Bring layers, comfortable walking shoes, and a reusable water bottle. Depending on the season, weather can vary a lot across different cities. We’ll send you a detailed packing list before your departure.
Travel with a Local-Led Group for a Stress-Free Experience
While solo travel is possible, going with a guided group like Vivid Travel removes all the friction: language barriers, transport confusion, cultural misunderstandings — gone. Instead, you focus on what matters: discovering, connecting, and enjoying.
